ALL PERFORMANCE ENSEMBLES
PRACTICE MAKES PERMANENT (AND PROFICIENT) AND PRIVATE LESSONS
We cannot emphasize enough the importance of maintaining the skills you’ve already learned, especially our Prelude musicians. Please be sure to practice regularly. As Dr. Andrew has wisely noted, practice makes permanent.
Returning students are expected to, at the very least, maintain the same level of skill the class reached at the end of the year. If you plan to continue with the same instrument, we suggest keeping your instrument rental active and pursuing summer private lessons with one of our coaches. It’s very easy for beginner instrument players to loose proper technique and form without practicing on a regular basis.
Practice Tips for Focused Practice
- Practice! Practice DAILY so you don’t forget what you learned!
- Stay hydrated
- Always pay attention to healthy posture and good breathing (don’t forget body and finger stretches)
- Work on the scales and arpeggios you know
- Practice with a metronome
- Practice rhythm and note reading (strings have the I can read music books)
- Work on Etude / Technique books (for upper ensembles)
- Continue to REVIEW the repertoire you learned this year
- Learn more pieces in your method books (strings can watch coaching videos)
- Listen to the repertoire in your method book
- Take private lessons during the summer, even if it is sporadically.
MUSIC FOUNDATIONS
- Thanks for a great year! It was a pleasure having you all in class and I hope to see you next year! If you’re not fluent in reading note names – in treble AND bass clef – please work on that over the break. Have a wonderful summer!
- You all should have received your corrected Music Foundation Evaluations. Parents, please take a look to see if there is anything your student needs to work on this summer.
- If I gave you your theory books, that’s yours to keep. It would benefit you to complete the rest of the book!
- Here are some links you can use to work on various topics.
- 2A & 3A
- NOTE & REST VALUE
- NOTE NAMES ON BOTH TREBLE CLEF AND BASS CLEF
- https://www.pedaplus.com/games/fn/
- Also, a lot of students have liked using the app called Staff Wars
- PIANO KEY NAMES
- 2B & 3B
- CIRCLE OF FIFTHS
- INTERVALS
- KEY SIGNATURES
- ANSWER KEY FOR DIATONIC TRIADS WORKSHEET
- 2A & 3A
PIANO 1
- Great job! You all were so much fun to have in class! I loved how diligent you were in practice and how kind and respectful you were of your fellow students. This summer, I hope you find times to sit down at the piano and play through the songs we learned this year. Remember to keep your fingers curved and play with a steady rhythm! 🙂
PIANO 2
- Ladies, I’m so glad we were able to make a Piano 2 class happen! What a fun year (despite the early morning class time)! I appreciate how positive and joyful you always were, and I hope you had a good time too! Have a great summer and keep up your piano skills!
BUCKETLINE
- What a great year! You all did a great job! Keep working on your technique in your method book for rudiments, focusing on accuracy. Use a metronome and try different tempos. Get ready for next year!
DRUMLINE
- It was wonderful working with you this year. Keep working on your technique in your method book for rudiments, focusing on accuracy. Use a metronome and try different tempos.
FLAGS

PRELUDE BAND (Beginner Students)
- Essential Elements Book 1 aka Yellow Book
- Ensemble
- Well, we made it through our another year together and what a great job you guys did!! The hardest thing about summer vacation is being motivated to practice. The best way to stay is to give yourself goals to learn new songs in your lesson books to play periodically for your friends and family. Remember you guys will get the privilege to perform earlier in the year when we get back so come back ready to play.
- Flute
- Great job this year flutists! The concert was incredible and you should be really proud of the hard work you have put in this year. Make sure to practice throughout the summer, focusing on practicing scales, breathing, counting measures and remember posture. Blessings to each of you!
- French Horn
- Great year! This summer, spend some time each week listening to symphonies by Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler – there’s a lot of great writing for horn in all of them. Try to practice 3-4 times/week, working on buzzing, natural horn, range expansion, and scales. Consider buying “Studies and Melodious Etudes for French Horn, Level 2” – by James Ployhar or “Sixty Selected Studies for Horn” by Kopprasch, or Book one of Maxime Alphonse’s “Deux Cents Etudes nouvelle” for horn. The Alphonse and Kopprasch are available for free download on imslp.org. You can choose an etude or two to work on each month, focusing on musicality, breath control, and technique.
- Percussion
- It was wonderful working with you this year. Keep working on your technique in your method book for mallet scales and snare rudiments, focusing on accuracy. Use a metronome and try different tempos.
- Saxophone
- What an exciting year of saxophone! Take what you have learned and go forth through the summer. Just 15 to 20 minutes every other day will keep what you’ve learned solidified. There are great resources available in the form of videos, online sheet music and specific saxophone books. Also have fun with learning songs that are already your favorites. It’s also also good to go back through the method book playing what you already know you can play but this time making sure you read the information on the pages in detail. This will help you review your basic techniques, such as tonguing, alternate, fingerings, breathing and music theory. We didn’t go through all the pages of the method this year, so there’s still a lot to learn. It might be fun to keep a list of all the things that you learned this summer.

PRELUDE ORCHESTRA (Beginner Students)
- Ensemble:
- I enjoyed working with you all this year! You are all at a great start and I’m looking forward to seeing you all again next year! This summer, please continue working in your Suzuki book, and constantly work on good posture and tone quality. In Training Orchestra, we will be playing new pieces together in multiple parts, starting to read notes and rhythms, and pushing you to the next level! Have a wonderful summer!
- Practice Summer Music:
- Suzuki Book 1: #1-6 (play through May Song by the end of the summer)
- Listen, listen, listen to Book 1
- Cellos & Bass
- Congratulations on a successful year with your excellent final performance. Whatever you spend your time doing, remember that, “practice makes permanent.” Over the summer: if you have your instrument, it would be a good idea to keep your hands and ears in good shape. This can be done by always beginning with open strings, and gradually play through review pieces, and if you are feeling ambitious, try learning some new songs. Always focus on good sound, and good form (straight bow, good posture, etc.). Bravi this year, and have a good summer!
- Violin & Viola
- I am so proud of the progress you guys have made this year. You were attentive, respectful and hardworking. I would also encourage you to continue listening to the Suzuki CD daily. To help you progress over the summer I do highly advise finding a violin/viola teacher to guide you through the next few songs. If you cannot, I suggest listening to the suzuki Bk.1 and practicing the songs you know. If you are feeling adventurous you can go through the video breakdowns of the next few songs.
- You can move forward through the Suzuki Book. However, make sure that before you move on your parents check off that the song you are currently playing sounds pleasant and is rhythmic. Remember to follow your practice routine and plan to play through May Song by the end of the summer.
- Students may use the Tomplay app to play with. Students should continue songs that they have passed off.
- Please remember it is how you play not what you play that matters. Meaning, if the song sounds bad you need to work to make it sound better. Pay attention to rhythm, tone, intonation, how you are holding the bow and placing the left hand fingers.
TRAINING ORCHESTRA (2nd Level Students or above)
- Ensemble
- Wonderful work this year in Training Orchestra! It sure has been a pleasure working with you all, and I’m looking forward to another great year next year. - A, D, & G scale/arpeggio – 3x each
- Suzuki book: review all pieces that string coaches have taught this year. Learn 1-2 new pieces from Suzuki book from where you left off! A great goal is to complete book 1

- “I Can Read” book: complete the book by the end of the summer
- Pitch – 2 lines a day: say note names, then play 3 times

- Cello & Bass
- Bravi a tutti! Excellent work this year and wonderful final performances. It has been a fun year getting to learn more tunes together and develop more skills. Remember, you will accel at whatever you dedicate time to. Over the summer: if you have your instrument, it would be a good idea to keep your hands and ears in good shape. MIDPOINT ORCHESTRA (3rd Level Students or above)
- Ensemble
- I am so pleased to see what you all accomplished this year in orchestra! I am excited about setting a good challenge for you all next year with new orchestra pieces! This summer, please continue working in your Suzuki book. If you have a private teacher, please continue progressing with your private teachers over the summer to prepare for orchestra this fall! If you don’t currently have a teacher and want one, I am available to teach lessons, or am more than willing to share ideas on good pieces or technique to work on over the summer. Please feel free to reach out if you need any help or guidance! I hope you all have a wonderful summer!
- Scale warm-up – 3x each (one different Major and Minor scale each week)
- Suzuki book: review all pieces that string coaches have taught this year. Learn 1-2 new pieces from Suzuki book from where you left off!
- Listen, listen, listen to Book 1, 2

- Cello & Bass
- Bravi! I’m very impressed with everyone’s work this year. Congratulations to you all.
- Regarding the “accents” from the “pineapple pineapple” and “huckleberry huckleberry” variations – although the idea is to have us all together, I personally don’t think that we need to do this. IF you decide to have accents on the note changes, be sure to do so with finesse, almost so that nobody notices and its an aid for yourself. In my opinion, watching the leader should be all we need.
- What’s next? Whenever you play I want to ask that you always think about sound and where our bow is (which lane). Tone is everything and can make it easier to hear the minute details of our left hand. Review is a big part of the “Suzuki” method, so I would encourage the pieces that we know to be perfected so they can be played for anyone on request.
- Viola & Violin

A great summer activity is to round up your siblings or cousins or neighbors to create your own backyard theatre show! Also, you can practice belly breathing (maybe a few minutes before bed on your back), vocal projection (remember the calling for your friend across the playground?) and lastly, pick a few things to memorize and perform them for your family! It can be poems, bible verses, a short story… anything to get your practice with memorizing and speaking in front of others. Remember to project and articulate and how to give and receive energy on stage. Have a great summer!
