audition + evaluation

new + returning students

Wonder Music Evaluations and Placement Auditions are easy and low-stress. Whether you’ve never picked up an instrument or have years of experience, we want students to learn their instruments at their own pace and encourage each other to become stronger players, together.

ATTENTION!

PRELIMINARY MUSIC EVALUATION FOR NEW and RETURNING STUDENTS

ALL new students interested in a beginner instrument class, band, orchestra, or choir are REQUIRED to complete an online Preliminary Music Evaluation (included in the Open House registration process).

Once complete, we will schedule your placement audition or Instrument Fair at a summer Open House, if applicable.

instrument guide & audition requirements

Below is a guide to understanding each instrument from which students can choose. In addition to the instrument details, required accessories, and cost estimates, there is a description of the instrument which tells how it is played, along with a list of skills ideal for a prospective player. These skills are instrument specific and will help you determine the best fit for your student. For example; flute players need good breath support so if your child has asthma it may not be a good fit.

Finally, each instrument has a list of personality traits typical for that instrument. Yes, instruments do tend to attract certain personalities, or, certain personalities are attracted to certain instruments. This is not always the case nor has it been scientifically proven or even necessary, but it is fun to consider. If you are uncertain of what instrument your child is best suited for, these personality traits might assist you in your selection.

Please consider three instruments your student would like to learn. We want to achieve balance and diversity for our ensembles so students will be guided in a way that will create a complete ensemble while keeping the child’s interest a top priority.

All instruments should have a natural finish. Unnatural colored instruments are not permitted.

* Most instruments will have care items such as valve oil, key oil, slide grease, polishing rags, reeds, and other items. Please be sure to ask about care kits and reeds when renting your instrument. Some items will add to the overall cost of playing an instrument. For example, double reeds for oboes and bassoons can become expensive and can break easily. If your student is not careful with reeds it might be better to pick a different instrument.

* Some stores offer rent to own, buyback, or trade-in options. Be sure to ask about any and all purchase options.

*Some instruments can be bought used at a significantly lower price than you will pay with a rental. When buying used it is best to purchase from music stores since they refurbish and repair all instruments before selling. If you do buy used from another source, craigslist, grandma’s attic, garage sale, etc. make sure it is evaluated by a professional instrumental repair specialist before bringing it to class. Music stores usually can give you contact information for the repair people they use or they might even be able to send it in for you.

During Wonder Open House events, you will also have an opportunity to attend an Instrument Fair where you can try different instruments.

Most instruments may be rented/purchased during the Instrument Fair through one of our partner music store representatives. Before purchasing an instrument from another source, please have it evaluated by a Wonder instructor/coach or trained personnel at a recommended music shop. If you already have an instrument, please note this during the evaluation or audition process for approval.

All instruments must be approved by the Wonder representativeAll instruments should have a natural finish. Unnatural colored instruments are not permitted.

Please view the Instrument Guide  for instrument details, required accessories, and cost estimates,  for consideration when choosing an instrument.

music evaluation + instrument fair/fitting

Music Evaluations, which include an online Music Guidance Survey, help us evaluate your child and determine which instrument your child may enjoy playing based on their musical aptitude, abilities, and interests.

Once complete, students will attend a Instrument Fair/Fitting where they can see and play different available instruments under the direction of trained personnel.

keep in mind

Band and orchestra are team concepts and just like a soccer team with a few players at each position, the ensemble needs a certain number of players on each instrument. Everyone has a different part to play and the ensemble cannot be whole unless every part is represented. The interest of the child is most important when choosing an instrument but the ensemble would not work if everyone made the same choice!

3. ATTEND INSTRUMENT FAIR

*Percussion: See additional Audition Requirements below

music evaluation + instrument fair/fitting
