MEMORY VERSES (SEE ALL)

  • Scripture of the Month: 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 — Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. — 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 English Standard Version (ESV)
  • Character Scripture:
    • John 3:16 – For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. – John 3:16 New King James Version (NKJV)
    • Leviticus 19:18 — You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD. — Leviticus 19:18 English Standard Version (ESV)
    • 1 John 5:3 — For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.  — 1 John 5:3
    • 1 John 4:19 — We love, because He first loved us.. — 1 John 4:19
    • Romans 5:8 — But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. — Romans 5:8

ALL PERFORMANCE ENSEMBLES

  • Please note the REQUIRED Practice Time for each ensemble and be sure to complete the listed number of minutes 5 days a week (or 4 for Recorder students, 3 for some Dance students). Please practice what is listed on the memo.
  • Repetition: You need adequate, consistent practice. You need to do repetitions. Rather than practicing your skills one time each practice session, do them a few times each time you practice so the skills become more natural and automatic.
  • Trimmed Nails: Nails should be trimmed shorter (especially string players).
  • Metronome & Tuner: Remember to Practice with a metronome & use a tuner to check your pitch
  • Mirror: Practice in front of a mirror for some of your practice times.
  • Reed Instruments: Make sure you have 3 extra reeds at all time. (Approved Brands)

  • Homeschool Music Fest Days Update:
    • If you would like to participate in the Solo & Ensemble Festival (Mar 20), registration is now open.
    • Wonder coaches will begin scheduling private preparation sessions. In addition to helping students select an appropriate piece, coaches can work with students to polish up their selection and get it performance ready. To schedule a private solo or student-led ensemble rehearsal session with a coach, please sign up on the spreadsheet [LINK]
    • For those who’d like to perform as a student-led ensemble, now is the time for students to form their groups and determine a schedule to practice together.
    • Keep in mind, some Wonder rooms may be available on Tuesday evenings for group practice sessions (this is upon request and a parent from the ensemble must be present).
    • The Solo and Ensemble Festival is a great opportunity for Training and Midpoint orchestra, band, and choir students. If you are unsure if this event will be a good fit for you, please speak with one of our coaches for guidance.

ALL WONDER STUDENTS

    • 2) You can try 3 times and take the highest of the 3 times as your record.
    • 3) Your feet cannot touch the sides or the box if being used to get it on.

FLAGS

  • Practice Time: 20m/5d
  • Great work today, ladies! That was a lot of repetition and you really pulled it together with the details. We’re in a good place to start to work on the details.
  • 🚩Attached is our very rough video of the drill we did before the break.
  • ✅ Watch yourself
  • ✅ Watch others, especially Aspen & Cassidy-they have the moves on the correct counts
  • ✅ Practice in small pieces of 4-8 counts and work out the basics, then put each piece together.
  • ✅ When the basics are solid, work on the details: flag position, glide step, posture, hands, etc. Scrutinize yourself to be the best you can be!

PRELUDE BAND (Beginner Students)

  • Practice Time: 20m/5d
  • Ensemble
    • Essential Elements Book 1 aka Yellow Book
      • There will be tests on the following lines in your essential elements book #26 as a solo # 30 as a class learn both lines A and B Switching on the repeat.#31 #42 no slower than 90 bpm on the metronome.
  • Rhythms (clapping https://photos.app.goo.gl/nrxnCqvWbuBghF7x5)
    • Huckleberry Jello
    • Gooseberry, Gooseberry
    • Pineapple, Pineapple
    • Huckleberry, Huckleberry
    • Jello (shh) lo
  •  Baritone
    • Warm up by buzzing in the mouthpiece. After placing the mouthpiece back in the baritone, focus on playing with a beautiful tone. Do lips slurs to see how many different notes you can play with 12. Continue practice session as indicated on handout.
  •  Clarinet
    • Practice Tips
    • ✅ Keeps cheeks flat, no puffs
    • ✅ Tongue shape should remain in the hissing cat 😺 position
    • ✅ As you go through your assignments (26, 30, 31 & 42) check teeth and cheeks to make sure they are in the correct positions.
  •  Flute
    • Physical Position: pay attention to the alignment of mouthpiece to body of flute. The top of the mouthpiece hole should be roughly aligned with the mechanism edge of the keys. When the mouthpiece is turned too far backward, the wrists are in an awkward position which is slowing fingering changes down. It makes it hard to move the fingers and is going to cause wrist pain within a short period of time. Wrists should be as neutral as possible so the fingers rest easily on the keys.
    • Technique:
      • -Continue to practice articulating each note. Don’t just huff them. Your tone is really nice when you use your tongue to articulate each note as written!
      • -Remember to funnel the air FASTER from your diaphragm through a smaller “straw” for reaching higher pitches.
      • -As a warm up, practice F, G, and A (notes you know) in two octaves, slowly switching from low to high, until they both sound pleasant to your ear. No fingering changes for these notes.
  •  Horn:
    • Warm up 3-4 minutes
      • ✅ Warm up with long tones always
      • ✅ Use the notes in the fingering chart that are numbered 1-12.
      • ✅ Play 2nd line G to 3rd line Bb 3-5 times and make sure you are hitting the correct pitches
    • Starfire March
      • ✅ Make sure to begin each note with a strong tongue -not hard, but enough that the start of each note is crisp.
    • Rock Point 5
      • ✅ Watch for slur signs over notes, play the notes slurred!
      • ✅ Work on the jump from Dangling D (below the staff)to 3rd line Bb.
      • ✅ Use the exercises we worked on in sectionals to hit these higher notes.
      • ↪ ♩♩♩♩ (4 quarter notes) followed by a whole note on each note that doesn’t always sound when played. If the note doesn’t sound on the correct pitch when you start adjust your embouchure to get the note, don’t stop & then start over, try and make each start of the note better. You are working towards getting the note to sound as you release the air from your tongue and begin the whole note. This should all be done with the same note. Use this on any note, but only one at a time.
  •  Percussion
    • Practice the new piece Starfire March and review Essential Elements Book I
    • Songs/Exercise
    • 34, 35, 42, 43, 54, 57. 58
  • Saxophone
    • Warm up your horn and yourself with lots of notes. Scales and songs you’ve already played are good for this.
    • After you & your instrument are warm, please use a tuner to tune your instrument. This helps to set your ears to the correct pitches even when not playing with others. It will also help you to become accustomed to tuning by yourself before rehearsals.
    • You played strongly today! Almost like we didn’t have 3 week break-good work!
    • Rock Point 5
      • ✅ The newest technique here is slurring. Be diligent to play the slurs in the right places with the correct articulation. Take the tempo slower and get used to the feel of tonguing the first note of the slur and letting the rest of the notes (1 in this case) flow out of the sax just by switching fingerings.
    • 🎷 Make sure to practice the rest of the songs assigned by Ms. Carol.
  • Trombone
    • Bring pencil to class!
    • Continue warmup by buzzing in the mouthpiece. After placing the mouthpiece back in the trombone, focus on playing with a beautiful tone. Do lips slurs to see how many different notes you can play in first position.
    • Practice in method book as mentioned in prelude band notes. Do worksheets and flash cards daily for note names and positions (if assigned)
  • Trumpet
    • Sit up straight – breath control
    • Work on keeping your three finger tips on the valves – strengthen your third finger
    • See the notes and get the fingering for each note quickly
    • Work on the notes for Rock Point and clap the rhythm until you get the feel for it
    • Be good on the Starfire March – Your tones were much better this week

TRAINING BAND (2nd Level Students or Above)

  • Practice Time: 30m/5d
  • Ensemble
    • Scales, arp & 3rds, 2 octaves (Use a metronome)
    • There will be a test on # 84 and 86-89 next week in the essential elements book.Practice #184 in the essential elements book from measure 1 to 26. It the 1812 Overature.
    • Review (Use a metronome)
      • Essential Elements Book 2 aka Red Book
      • We have added /ascot overactive to our band practice. This week work on this piece focusing on the dynamics. Work on playing very softly during the parts marked with a P for piano. Your work on refried beans is going very well. Let’s work on our breathing. Be sure to breath only at the breath marks or on the rests.
  • Bass Guitar
    • Scales, arp & 3rds, 2 octaves.
    • Work on warm-up routine, include scale work in the warm up
  • Clarinet
    • Work on Refried Beans & Ascot Overture
    • Ascot Overture practice tips:
    • 🧣Look up all of the fingerings for any notes that you don’t know-these are the notes that are “over the break” meaning from 3rd line Bb to 3rd line B. More on that vocabulary next week.
    • 🧣Look for anything about Bb. Make yourself a fingering chart with each of these new notes-make it fancy like your drawings and you will never forget these fingerings!
    • 🧣The 8th notes are fast-make sure you are tonguing correctly with tu, tu, tu, tu or do, do, do, do. If you are unable to sustain tonguing at that speed throughout the 8 measures, then practice saying those syllables walking around your house or as you do other schoolwork or while you’re doing dishes. The idea is to get your tongue muscle strong & agile.
    • 🧣For Ascot, it is best practiced in sections; divide it up and conquer!
    • Happy Practicing! 🎵❤️🎵❤️🎵❤️🎵
  • Electric Guitar
    • Scales, arp & 3rds, 2 octaves.
    • Work on warm-up routine, include scale work in the warm up

  • Saxophone
    • There will be a test on # 84 and 86-89 next week in the essential elements book.Practice #184 in the essential elements book from measure 1 to 26. It the 1812 Overature.
  •  Trombone
    • Begin warmup by buzzing in the mouthpiece and then move to lip slurs. Continue your warmup by playing with tonguing then slurring as you move from first to third position on any pitch.
    • Scales: On page 40, work on key of Bflat 1-3. And eflat scale on handout. Page 47 (chromatic scale) low Bflat to high Bflat – again emphasizing speed (without sacrificing pitch)
    • For ensemble, especially practice Caravan and Swing Fever and Last Dance (use online recordings for Swing Fever and Last Dance). For Caravan – mark slide positions on sheet music for any tricky ones (especially accidentals) before next class.
    • practice 78-84 – be careful with the different key signatures. Also practice Refried Beans & Ascot Overture – especially the measures with accidentals.
  •  Trumpet
