Below are notes to help each family prepare for their time at Wonder, including details for all students, music students, and class-specific notes. We’ve also included a short note to help students understand the goal or what we’re working toward during the course of the year.

We suggest printing the future class notes or copy/pasting relevant sections, then printing


ALL ATTENDEES

  • Label ALL personal possessions
  • Attire worn according to Wonder Way
  • Bag / Backpack for folders, binders, class attire, some instruments, supplies, etc… (You do NOT need a bag for every class, but we’ve listed classes that require a bag, below)
  • Water Bottle with tight-fitting lid (NO JUICE)
  • Snack (morning and afternoon – actual times vary, MESS-FREE)
  • Lunch (cold lunch, MESS-FREE)
  • Dinner (if your family plans to stay for community time events, please bring a picnic dinner)

* Regarding Food. Snack breaks are not just to give the body a rest or refuel energy but to encourage relationship building. When selecting healthy snacks and lunch please consider the following:

  • Water ONLY (NO JUICE) in water bottle with tight-fitting lid
  • Bring a well-balanced lunch; this is especially important for students who are staying in the afternoon
  • Bring snacks and cold lunches which do not require refrigeration and/or use of the microwave
  • Choose simple mess-free snacks easy enough to eat within a 5-minute break
  • Include an ice-pack in your student’s lunch pale, if needed
  • Healthy snacks can include but are not limited to, fresh fruits and vegetables, dried fruit, fruit cups, applesauce, granola bars, crackers, and cheese sticks
  • Avoid foods with added sugar, dyes, and artificial ingredients (such ingredients in food have been shown to negatively affect behavior and and focus/concentration)
  • Avoid sweets, chocolates, cookies, etc.
  • NO popcorn or beverages other than water
  • Nut-free snacks (although we do our best to make sure surfaces are wiped, because class materials are shared, we ask all snacks be nut-free)
  • Avoid food sharing

ALL ENSEMBLES (BAND/ORCHESTRA/RECORDER/CHOIR)

  • Label ALL personal possessions

  • Plain Black 3-Ringed Binder with Clear Pockets (label inside binder)
  • Pencil & Eraser (no pens)
  • Metronome + Tuner (app or device)

    *Excluding CHOIR & Prelude Orchestra Members (beginner string cello, double bass, viola, & viola students –  no stand need this year).

PRELUDE BAND (Beginner Students)

DANCE

  • Keep hair up in a ponytail or braid
  • Bag / Backpack
  • Black Canvas Ballet Shoes: Adult Size, Boy/Girl Size, Child Size
  • Plain Black Leggings (fitted but not too tight to restrict movement): No particular brand
  • Rehearsal Shorts (mid-thigh length, any color): Adult Size, Boy/Girl Size OR Rehearsal Skirt (mid-thigh length, black): Adult Size, Boy/Girl Size
  • Performance Attire: TBA
  • Goal: Community Events & Family Day Event

*Regarding modesty. It is imperative the Dance Guide can clearly observe and evaluate each students form in order to ensure proper technique and avoid injury. Leggings must be worn with shorts or a skirt. Loose and long attire that obstructs the guide from properly doing so are not at the best interest of the student for this discipline.


OPEN GYM

  • Clothes should be loose, comfortable, and allow for freedom of movement and independence in dressing. No leggings or shorts above the thigh.
  • Students are encouraged to bring a calm, indoor activity for Open Block classes. Books, card or board games, and schoolwork are all appropriate options for Non-enrichment activities.
  • Goal: Develop improved movement habits, strength, awareness

ART (DRAWING & WATERCOLOR)

  • Bag / Backpack
  • Goal: Community Projects & Year of Wonder Spring Event

ART (TEXTILES – EMBROIDERY)

  • Bag / Backpack
  • Goal: Community Projects & Year of Wonder Spring Event

ART (PHOTOGRAPHY)

  • DSLR or mirrorless camera (some bridge cameras are also fine)*
  • Standard Kit Lens (the most common kit lens is the 18-55mm)
  • Camera Bag
  • Camera Memory Card
  • Camera Tripod
  • Goal: Community Projects & Year of Wonder Spring Event

*You will need a camera that has manual settings. An easy way to tell if your camera is suitable for our Photography class is to look at the top and see if the camera has a dial with the letter ‘M’ (for manual).


THEATER

  • Small group rehearsals will be scheduled in the evenings during the spring session so production groups can have enough time to build sets, design costumes, and rehearse lines.  If you are unable to attend evening rehearsals, please let us know so we can be sure your student is not assigned to a role which requires a high level of commitment outside the classroom.
  • Costumes may be needed, depending on production role
  • Goal: Family Day Event

MUSIC MAKERS 1 & 2

  • No additional items required
  • A snack may be eaten before or after class in Open Gym
  • Goal: Community Events & Year of Wonder Spring Event

LITTLE MOVERS & LITTLE SHAKERS & LITTLE CYCLES

  • No additional items required
  • A snack may be eaten after class in Open Gym
  • Goal: Gain more exposure to musical concepts and bond with grownup

DISCOVERY

  • Full-Sized Backpack & Lunch Box
  • Daily Snacks (mess-free, sugar-free, dye-free, nut-free; a pack of crackers, a cheese stick, some cut up fruit, etc. works well; amounts should be suitable for a ‘snack’; snacks can be inside lunch box, but will help your child find his or her snack easily if it is packed separately from lunch and labeled as ‘Snack.’)
  • Change of Clothes (1 set of seasonally appropriate, including socks)
  • Apron / Smock (recommended)
  • Show-and-tell items (on occasion; request notification will be noted in future class notes)
  • Child should be potty trained and can independently use the restroom
  • Family Photo (1 – 4X6) we can place in our room for the children to look and share about
  • Goal: Strengthen skills in grace and courtesy, concentration, independence, creativity, curiosity, and confidence

* Regarding Clothing. Clothes should be loose, comfortable, and allow for freedom of movement and independence in dressing. Clothes that can be easily laundered are highly recommended, since messes are a constant part of indoor and outdoor activities. Because we cannot keep track of everyone’s clothes without labels, please label every item of clothing, including mittens and socks, with your child’s name. Labeling clothes helps us get them back to the right child.

DANCE FOR DISCOVERY STUDENTS

We ‘re happy to announce we have a dance class for our Discovery students during the last 30 minutes of Block 5 (4:30pm-5:00pm). It is not visible on the online schedule because the class is only opened to enrolled students. If you’re child is interested in participating, please note the details below:

  • View practice attire requirements on Expectations page.
  • Black Canvas Ballet Shoes: Child Size
  • Rehearsal attire should allow for free movement of the legs. There will be no time to change before class, so please be sure your child is dressed upon arrival (excluding dance shoes).
  • Plain Black Leggings (fitted but not too tight to restrict movement): No particular brand
  • Rehearsal Shorts (mid-thigh length, any color) OR Rehearsal Skirt (mid-thigh length, black)
  • Performance Attire: TBA
  • Goal: Family Day Event

PLAYROOM WITH GUIDE FOR STAFF AND HELPING HANDS

  • ALL personal items should be labeled
  • Full Sized Backpack OR Diaper Bag
  • Daily Snacks (mess-free, sugar-free, dye-free, nut-free; a pack of crackers, a cheese stick, some cut up fruit, etc works well; amounts should be suitable for a ‘snack’; snacks can be inside lunch box, but will help your child find his or her snack easily if it is packed separately from lunch and labeled as ‘Snack.’)
  • Diapers (5 minimum)
  • Wipes (1 pack, will be shared among the children to expedite the changing process, label not required)
  • Change of Clothes (2 sets of seasonally appropriate, including socks)
  • Underwear or Cloth Training Pants (if beginning or have mastered the toileting process, several pairs)
  • Extra Shoes (if your child is prone to bathroom accidents)
  • Family Photo (1 – 4X6) we can place in our room for the children to look and share about
  • Goal: Strengthen skills in grace and courtesy, concentration, independence, creativity, curiosity, and confidence

* Regarding Clothing. Clothes should be loose, comfortable, and allow for freedom of movement and independence in dressing. Please do not send in clothing with characters from TV shows or movies as these can be quite distracting. Clothes that can be easily laundered are highly recommended, since messes are a constant part of indoor and outdoor activities. Because we cannot keep track of everyone’s clothes without labels, please label every item of clothing, including mittens and socks, with your child’s name. Labeling clothes helps us get them back to the right child.

PLAYROOM WITH PARENT

  • The items listed above are suggested for children with parents, as well
  • Parents of young children may use the Playroom. Parents MUST accompany children in the Playroom at all times. The Playroom staff is only responsible for children of Guides or other Wonder helpers currently scheduled in an assignment.

LAB

  • No additional items required
  • Lab Materials only include items needed to conduct experiments in class; textbook not included
  • Goal: Learn through hands-on science experiments and activities

STUDY HALL

  • No additional items required
  • Students are encouraged to bring a calm, indoor activity for Open Block classes. Books, card or board games, and schoolwork are all appropriate options for non-enrichment activities.

STUDENT VOLUNTEER

  • No additional items required
  • Assignments are based on program needs and the student’s maturity, capabilities, listen skills, and character. Assignments may vary from week to week. Students should arrive ready to serve as requested with a good attitude, respect, cheerfulness, and perfect effort.
